A seemingly ordinary 26 year old Pakistani woman – Samar Khan – has made history by becoming the first woman to cycle over the 4,500 metre high Biafo Glacier in the Karakoram range – Gilgit Baltistan.

Samar holding a master’s degree in Physics is talented in more ways than just one. She’s a certified para-glider, a trained MMA fighter, a social activist and a member of the National youth assembly. In terms of hobbies she greatly enjoys adventure sports: trekking, cycling, mountain climbing and paragliding, and comes from a modest family in Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Like a true achieve Samar is not satisfied with her achievements just yet. She wants to take things to the next level and become a member of the national cycling team. She also plans to head back to Biafo and re-discover the site in more depth; covering the locations she missed the first time.Samar is a patriot at heart who enjoys exploring the natural and wondrous beauty of Pakistan. She greatly persuades other people to take up cycling, which not only makes for great exercise but also gives people an opportunity to explore their outdoors – Something we definitely need to do in this digital age!
Samar set out for her life changing journey in July 2016. She first made her way to Skardu and from there set out for Biafo. The exhausting and challenging trip took a total of 18 days and the biggest struggle she faced was the elevation of the terrain; forcing her to lift herself against gravity.
In order to be physically prepared for the hardships, Samar knew she would have to face and overcome, she started training 6 months before leaving. She trekked on the weekends, followed a particular diet plan and regularly hit the gym – The level of commitment she showed to achieve her goal is truly inspiring!
From her amazing achievements it’s evident that Samar was always an adventurous soul. Her first major cycling trip happened in 2015 when she travelled from Islamabad to Khunjerab pass and in the first half of this year she travelled from Minar-e-Pakistan to Wagah border.
