Karachi – May 7, 2016: Imam Buksh Sajidi have emerged victors of the 5th K-Electric Lyari Football League after a solid display in the final against Sir Siddiq Singhar. The under – 16s league based tournament, organized by K-Electric in association with Anti-Narcotics Board and Pakistan Rangers, saw 16 teams go head to head for the ultimate honor. The main purpose of the tournament was to provide the youth of Lyari a platform to showcase their skills and is the only grassroots movement in football targeted towards the under-privileged youth of Pakistan.
A closing ceremony was held at People’s Stadium Lyari in which Tayyab Tareen, CEO K-Electric and Syed Fakhar Ahmed, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, K-Electric awarded the trophy and cash prize of Rs.100,000 to the winning team; the runners up received cash prize of Rs. 75,000. MM Mehdi had earlier emerged victorious in their game against Capt. Umar Hangaro on Friday for third position and were awarded cash prize of Rs. 50,000. The hotly contested final saw both teams stretch themselves to the max in a bid to clinch the trophy. But Imam Buksh Sajidi’s Sameer’s match winning performance saw his team lift the trophy in front of hundreds of footballing fans. For exceptional performances throughout the K-Electric Lyari Football League, Mateen from Chaudhary Ghulaam Muhammad was declared man of the tournament. K-Electric shall also be providing six of the best players from this league an opportunity to represent the power utility’s senior football team. Speaking on the occasion, Tayyab Tareen, CEO K-Electric commented, “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the winning team on putting up an outstanding performance. Both teams, in my opinion, made the past footballing legends of Lyari proud with their technical display and skill set. This part of Karachi, has always been been known for producing footballing greats, and the objective of this tournament is to produce a crop of future footballing heroes at an international level.” A total of 288 participants under or 16 years of age competed in the Lyari League this year. Previous editions of the league have provided a platform to 1,400 children from the locality. Following the presentation ceremony, fireworks were held to mark the end of this tournament.
