Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has been released from Adiala Jail after being granted bail in the new Toshakhana case. She was released on Thursday, a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) approved her bail in this high-profile case.
Special Judge Shahrukh Arjumand issued the release orders for Bushra Bibi, following the submission of a Rs1 million surety bond by her lawyers, Malik Tariq Mehmood Noon and Sohail Satti, as required by the IHC.
Bushra Bibi, the former First Lady of Pakistan, had been incarcerated since January 31 after an accountability court sentenced both her and Imran Khan to 14 years in prison in connection to the Toshakhana case. Since her arrest, she had been held at Adiala Jail, where her husband, Imran Khan, has also been imprisoned since August 5 of last year due to a separate Toshakhana case.
The couple was initially taken into custody on July 13, shortly after being acquitted in the Iddat case, only to face fresh charges the following day. Imran Khan now faces several new cases, many stemming from events on May 9, while still being held in prison.
The latest Toshakhana case revolves around accusations from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which claims that Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan unlawfully kept a valuable Bvlgari jewelry set—comprising a necklace, earrings, bracelets, and rings—gifted by a foreign leader. The set was allegedly obtained at a significantly reduced price, resulting in financial losses to the exchequer.
Following the IHC’s decision to grant her bail, the special court issued her release order, which stated, “The bail of the accused in the aforementioned case has been approved by the high court,” while also noting, “If the accused is not wanted in any other case, they should be released upon confirmation.”
Bushra Bibi’s release comes after spending nine months in custody, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against her and Imran Khan.
