SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) has released its prediction about the Shawwal moon sighting. According to astronomical calculations, the new moon will be born on March 29, 2025, at 3:58 PM (PST).
The moon’s visibility will depend on several key factors. These include its age, distance from the sun, altitude at sunset, and the overall atmospheric conditions.
The moon’s age at sunset will be approximately 27 hours, with an angular distance from the sun of about 16 degrees. Additionally, the moon’s altitude at sunset is expected to be around 14 degrees. These factors contribute to the likelihood of the Shawwal crescent being visible.
Considering these factors, SUPARCO predicts a high chance of the Shawwal crescent being visible on the evening of March 30, 2025, in Pakistan. If the crescent is sighted, Eid ul-Fitr will be observed on March 31, 2025, following 29 days of Ramadan.
Similar predictions apply to Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries. They are also expected to sight the moon on March 30, marking Eid ul-Fitr on March 31, 2025.
Despite these strong indications, SUPARCO clarified that the final decision rests with the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee will base its decision on testimonies received from various parts of the country.
While SUPARCO’s calculations offer guidance, the moon sighting process still involves careful observation and witness reports. The official announcement will be made by religious authorities in Pakistan after reviewing all evidence.
If confirmed, this will mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid ul-Fitr celebrations across the country.
