Scientists have filmed a colossal squid in its natural habitat for the first time. This is a significant discovery, as the species has been known for over 100 years but never filmed alive in the ocean.
A juvenile squid, 30 cm (11.8 inches) long, was filmed at a depth of 600 meters (1,968 feet). The filming took place near the South Sandwich Islands, in the South Atlantic Ocean. The footage was recorded during a 35-day expedition led by the University of Essex.
The colossal squid is known to grow up to 7 meters (23 feet) long. It can also weigh as much as 500 kg (1,100 lb). These giant creatures are the heaviest invertebrates on Earth. The squid discover on the 100th anniversary of its identification.
A remote control vehicle controls the footage. The Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Falkor (too) vessel provided the necessary equipment for the mission. The research team was initially unsure of the squid’s identity but filmed it because it looked “beautiful and unusual.”
Dr. Michelle Taylor, chief scientist, expressed excitement about the discovery. The squid’s image was later verified by Dr. Kat Bolstad. Previous squid sightings were mostly of remains found in the stomachs of whales or seabirds. Seeing one alive was a rare and thrilling moment.
Mysteries of the Colossal Squid and the Southern Ocean Unveiled
People know little about the life cycle of the colossal squid. Juveniles appear transparent, a feature that fades as they grow. The squid’s eight arms have hooks in the middle, a distinguishing feature of the species. Adult squids die but never appear alive at such depths.
The Natural History Museum has mentioned that the global population of colossal squids is still uncertain. In 2022, the museum said these creatures are between legend and reality. This new footage offers valuable insights into their behavior.
In addition to the colossal squid footage, scientists also filmed a glacial glass squid in January. Dr. Jyotika Virmani of the Schmidt Ocean Institute praised the discoveries. She highlights how little people know about the majestic creatures of the southern ocean. This only adds to the mystery of the deep sea.
