Google Pays Tribute To Legendary Ghazal Singer Iqbal Bano On Her 81st Birthday

Google pays tribute to legendary acclaimed ghazal singer Iqbal Bano with a customized Google Doodle on her 81st birthday.

Google Doodle has previously honored Pakistan’s legends such as Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Noor Jehan, Waheed Murad, Nazia Hassan and Fatima Surayya Bajia.

The legendary Iqbal Bano, Pride of Performance Award winner in 1974, was a highly acclaimed Ghazal singer from Pakistan. She was best known for her semi-classical Urdu ghazal songs and classical thumris, but also sang easy-listening numbers in the 1950s films.

Iqbal Bano was said to be a specialist in singing the ghazals of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. In 1985, Bano became an icon when she roused a strong crowd of 50,000 people in Lahore by singing Faiz’s passionate Urdu anthem, Hum Dekhenge. In due course, she generated more and more fame and became a specialist in singing the Kalam of Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Her inciting ghazals were seen as an act of defiance and resistance.
