Post Ishq Zahe Naseeb, Farooq Rind rightfully earned the tag of being the undisputed King of the thriller genre. The director’s latest offering ‘Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay’ packs a bundle of suspense and an A-lister cast. It carries a baggage of tremendous expectations. But the million-dollar question is, does it live up to the humongous expectations? Does it have its heart in the right place? Thankfully, it does!
Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay Episode 1
Episode 1 begins with the premise of a household where we are introduced to the childhood of three cousins Aswad, Mehreen and Mashal.
Aswad lives in Kuwait with his mother Saliha (Huma Nawab) and yearly visits Pakistan. He likes Mehreen and Mashalisn’t too pleased with their equation. Shagufta (Zainab Qayyum) is mostly seen degrading her daughter Mashal. She keeps on insulting her on various accounts, like not to play with Mehreen, be like Mehreen as she is a topper in her class etc. Deep down in her subconscious, Mashal starts to hate Mehreen.
As the story progresses the complexes of the characters are revealed. Mehreen’s father Mansoor (Omair Rana) is a government official; he’s a drug addict and is involved in fraud cases. He steals and sells his wife Rabia’s (Laila Wasti) jewelry to pay off his loans. His brother Tahir (Ali Tahir) and mother played by Shameem Hilali force Rabia to leave Mansoor. Mehreen is confused and devastated by all this. At last one day, Mansoor dies.
Time leaps and Mehreen aka (Mahira Khan) wakes up from a disturbing dream where she sees her father. She is unable to breathe; she looks up for her inhaler but couldn’t find it. In the next seen Mahsal aka (Kubra Khan) is seen throwing the inhaler. Mashal doesn’t leave any opportunity in creating problems for Mehreen. Aswad aka (Usman Mukhtar) also makes an entry while talking on a video call with her mother. He plans to come back to Pakistan.
When was the last time you enjoyed a drama for its gripping plot, its compelling story?
Content is changing rapidly and one can connect with viewers across the globe even without making the usual run-of-the-mill products. ‘Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay’proves it. Choices… to choose between right or wrong is simple. The character arcs of the two ladies are poles apart. The game of cutthroat competition indulged by the two cousin sisters is electrifying and easily the hallmark of the enterprise.
Writer Umera Ahmed has several moments that merit a mention. The best part is,the writing is full of energy and surprises, not once does it take the been-there-seen-that route. Farooq Rind, with the skills of a master storyteller, amalgamates a human story in a thriller format. There is a certain uninhibited genuineness in Rind’s direction.
The television comeback of Mahira Khan
The drama serial premiers during a time when the Saas-Bahu fiascos are ruling the primetime. It breaks the monotony, shatters the unwritten rules of the game, and score full marks. A HUM TV product is special. The illustrious network has cemented its position as the market leader by churning out memorable dramas and successfully transporting us to a world of make-believe in their craft. ‘Hum Kahan Ke Schay Thay’ is special. Mahira Khan, the superstar, whose last outing on Television ‘Sadqay Tumharay’ (2014) was a mega-hit. She returns to the small screen after a hiatus.
Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay: A powerful script
Correspondingly, I don’t think Mahira Khan could’ve got a more cohesive script to return to television. This is unlike what the actress has done in the past. Think of Mahira and you recall dramas like Humsafar, Shehr-e-zad, Sadqay Tumharay and Bin Roye. But the supremely talented actress sheds her inhibitions and goes non-glam as Mehreen. She’s stellar, in terrific form, immersing herself in this character, so much so that after a point you forget you’re watching someone who has immortalized so many characters.
Kubra Khan is a surprise package. Her body language, her anger and fury all fall upon wonderfully. UsmanMukhtar makes a stunning impact. We don’t get much to see of him in the first episode but hoping to expect a winning act from him. Also, the child actors come across as completely natural.
The most unique aspect of the play is that we might not be able to predict plot twists, at least in the beginning.Apart from the strong plot and cast, the OST also does full justice to the play as it is soothing, soulful, and melodious; definitely, one tune that can be played on loop.
‘Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay’ airs every Sunday at 8 pm on HUM TV.
