Women, are the dominant population of the world yet restricted in most areas due to backward thinking. This holds especially true for rural areas such as those in Pakistan. However, every now and then there is an outlier, one woman determined and therefore destined to make a difference for herself and society. Phapul Khatoon, a woman still unknown to the masses, is a resident of the village of Mangarjee, another place where women were merely considered housekeepers. Where she was born, it was common that women were expected by society to play the role of housekeepers and were never asked what their dreams were and how to fulfill them. Forcefully dropping out during Class 8 from school, she decided to get herself enrolled in a school once more and this time in the class of her daughter!
How often do you hear a mother getting a B.A degree with her daughter? Taking the initiative to educate herself proved game changing as way led to way. Once she passed Class 8th, her village was visited by Engro for their WELD (Women Empowerment Through Livestock Development) program which aims to empower people via training in order to generate a significant impact on their lives. There is no shortage of people who are only waiting for the perfect push in order to give their livelihoods a boost, Phapul Khatoon was among those special individuals who took the risk to go against the grain.
Phapul Khatoon was amongst the individuals selected for WELD Program that led her to be trained by a highly skillful Engro team, and working with them for a period of three years. Her rigorous efforts bore fruit and enabled her to begin a dairy farm to support her family.
Considered an “Ordinary Woman” all her life, it was when she was mid-aged when she truly began her adventure by making a difference in the society, which was holding back half the population. Phapul Khatoon proved that passion and determination can bring about change in the most rigid of places.
She is highly grateful for Engro and its WELD Program which not only revolutionized her life in such a short span of time but has also allowed her to act towards changing the lives of women in her own region!
Today, Phapul Khatoon is proud to state that she is actively involved in educating and also providing medical care to people from nearby villages. Impact programs like WELD actually created a ripple effect of positivity where people inspired by them pay good deeds forward. Thanks to Engro’s focus on impacting the communities in its value chains in the areas of education, health and livelihood Phapul Khatoon is the proud earner of around Rs. 50,000 Per Month!
Just take a look at the embedded video and get ready to go on an emotional Road trip where she states, “I used to only be concerned with household chores like any other ordinary woman of my village and now I earn fifty thousand rupees per month”. This sense of achievement and accomplishment is the essence of her story. We featured her here for a purpose. Girls, take those risks, break those chains and follow your dreams and passion, and if you are truly determined and driven, nothing can stop you from achieving your objectives and becoming an inspiration for all to follow.
