Internet services in Pakistan are expected to normalize within the next three days

Internet services across Pakistan are expected to return to normal within the next three days, following the completion of a controversial firewall trial, according to telecom sources. The trial, which has caused widespread disruptions to mobile signals and internet speeds, is part of a new initiative aimed at enhancing national security by blocking unwanted content.

Firewall Installation and Impact on Services

Sources close to the matter confirmed that the recent slowdown in mobile signals and internet services is directly linked to the installation of this new firewall. The firewall, equipped with deep packet inspection (DPI) capabilities, has been implemented across internet service providers (ISPs) in Pakistan. This system is designed to filter and block specific types of content deemed inappropriate or harmful, contributing to the recent digital disruptions.

The slowdown has sparked significant backlash from internet users and digital rights activists, who have voiced concerns over the impact on digital platforms and the broader implications for internet freedom in the country.

Government’s Response and Future Outlook

Telecom sources have assured that the current issues affecting internet speeds, particularly on social media platforms, will be resolved within two to three days after the firewall’s trial period concludes. This is the second trial run of the system; the first, conducted in July, also resulted in a noticeable slowdown of online services.

The federal government has allocated over Rs 30 billion in the development budget for the acquisition and installation of this advanced filtering system. Although the funds were provided to the Ministry of Information Technology, the project is being executed by another power center, underscoring the importance placed on national security in this initiative.

As the firewall trial nears completion, internet users in Pakistan can expect a return to normal service levels within the next few days. However, the broader implications of this new filtering system, particularly concerning digital rights and internet freedom, remain a point of contention among stakeholders. The situation will likely continue to evolve as the system is fully integrated and its impact becomes clearer.
