Ten years ago, in 2011, Geo entertainment delivered an enthralling love saga Khuda Aur Mohabbat. The spiritual love story of two star-struck lovers, the intricate plot, the performances, and the soulful OST left an ineradicable impression on the heart and mind of the viewers. Not every drama that’s triumphant merits a sequel, but the play had the kind of genre that justifies a sequel. Carrying the franchise forward, in 2016 Khuda Aur Mohabbat 2 aired, and was declared a hit.
The third installment, as a result, comes with weighty baggage. It has to outshine the previous two parts in terms of content, ought to be more majestic in terms of look and canvas. For season 3, Abdullah Kadwani of 7th Sky entertainment revamped the whole project by casting Feroze Khan and Iqra Aziz as lead actors with Syed Wajahat Hussain as the director. So is the follow-up a worthy fare or is it merely capitalizing on the popular brand? Let’s Analyze…
The Half Baked Script
The biggest problem with Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 is that there’s hardly any storyline. Whatever of Hashim Nadeem Khan story is there is lame and confusing and it rests on a wafer-thin plot. The one-sided love story between Farhad (Feroze Khan) and Mahi (Iqra Aziz) is plain ordinary. It simply doesn’t connect. The franchise concentrates more on opulence and grandeur rather than substance.
Direction Fumble
Wajahat Hussain takes out the best from his actors but Hussain has stretched some sequences unnecessarily. The rude attitude of Mahi’s mother in law (Hina Bayat) has been over stretched. The inconsistency between Sahiba’s (Sunita Marshal) character and her wardrobe was evident throughout. The concept of Iddat has been depicted incorrectly. A widow isn’t supposed to roam around in the house freely, especially in front of Sikandar (Junaid Khan). There’s no doubt that the drama looks rich. Every frame is a visual delight and it shows that money has been spent like water. Wajahat’s direction suffers as a result of flawed writing.
Slow Pace
I wonder what’s going in the director’s mind as far as the tempo of an episode is concerned. The viewers wait for a week and all they get to watch are just four scenes. Adding more to the horror is the promo of the next episode that doesn’t build any suspense or hype. Because the promo itself reveals it all; watching the promo or episode is kind of equal. Why?
Performances keep this Sinking Ship Afloat
Performances are wonderful, Feroze Khan looks dashing, and performance-wise, he is excellent. Iqra Aziz Hussain is on another level altogether. She gets into the skin of her character and delivers raw and real emotions. The grand supporting cast also contributes to the narrative with aplomb. But, no actor is bigger than the script. Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 has its moments. But it is riddled with clichés and flaws that take the magnum opus down.
Final Word
Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 is a disappointing fare that lacks souldue to its wafer-thin plot. 28 episodes down, Farhad confronts Mahi again. Her mother-in-law wants Sikandar to marry Mahi. Let’s see what happens next. I hope that the upcoming episodes will bring the narrative back on track and prove to be refreshing experience for the viewers.
