LUMS Welcomes Over 1,200 Students with an Innovative Orientation Programme

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has welcomed an exceptional cohort of over 1,200 students from across the country, marking the beginning of their transformative educational journey. This year’s Orientation programme was a dynamic blend of innovative activities and engaging events, meticulously designed to inspire, connect, and prepare students for the rigorous academic challenges ahead.

In his address to parents, Vice Chancellor Dr. Ali Cheema underscored the importance of a broad-based education in today’s rapidly changing world. He highlighted the impact of technological advancements on the job market, stressing the need for students to be flexible and adaptable. “Due to technological advancements, there will be significant disruption in the job market, and students should have the flexibility and adaptability to reskill themselves. This is why the curriculum at LUMS is designed to provide young adults with a diverse set of skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning. We aim to produce holistic individuals who possess real leadership potential in any job they undertake,” he stated.

Orientation 2024 provided the new students with valuable opportunities to interact with faculty and peers, setting the stage for a successful first semester. The programme covered essential aspects such as the LUMS Code of Conduct, course selection, and balancing academic and extracurricular activities. Faculty panels also addressed critical topics like personal effectiveness, social maturity, and selecting majors, all aimed at helping students navigate their university life effectively. Engaging social activities and sports competitions added to the excitement, culminating in a memorable batch photo that captured the spirit of the event.

Dr. Adnan Zahid, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), praised the programme, stating, “This year’s Orientation offered sessions designed to support our incoming undergraduate students. A diverse array of activities ranging from informative sessions on academic integrity and course enrolment to engaging social events helped ensure a smooth transition into university life. Valuable alumni panels were also lined up to provide guidance and insights.”

The success of the Orientation programme was made possible by the collaborative efforts of campus offices, students, and the Student Orientation Committee. Orientation Coaches, Deputies, and Peer Ambassadors at LUMS for Social Support (PALss) played a vital role in guiding the new students throughout the event.

Provost Dr. Tariq Jadoon welcomed the new cohort with enthusiasm, stating, “Congratulations on making it to LUMS! Joining a university marks a pivotal transition, and the LUMS Orientation sets the tone for the journey ahead. This year’s event emphasized the importance of coming prepared to classes, balancing activities, and making the most of the diverse programmes offered. Among Pakistan’s brightest talent, some students may find themselves below the mean, but that’s not a bad place to be if learning and growth are taking place. The success of LUMS alumni is defined by the rich experiences and opportunities they embrace, not just their grades. LUMS has been pathbreaking in many ways, and its success has been driven by exceptional faculty and a steadfast commitment to merit.”

As the new students embark on their academic journey at LUMS, they are set to experience a world-class education that not only equips them with knowledge but also fosters their growth into well-rounded individuals prepared to lead in a rapidly evolving world.
