Internet Disruption to Continue Until October Due to Submarine Cable Repairs

In a recent announcement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed that the ongoing internet slowdown across the country is expected to continue until October 2024. This comes as a result of significant disruptions in two of the seven submarine cables that connect Pakistan to the global internet infrastructure.

The Cause of the Slowdown

The PTA identified the primary cause of the slowdown as faults in the SMW4 and AAE-1 submarine cables. These cables are crucial for maintaining Pakistan’s international internet connectivity, and their malfunction has led to a noticeable decrease in internet speeds nationwide.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PTA elaborated that the SMW4 cable is anticipated to be repaired by early October 2024. The repair of the AAE-1 cable, which is also underway, is expected to enhance internet performance once completed.

Impact on Internet Users

The slowdown has caused widespread frustration among internet users in Pakistan. Over the past few weeks, individuals have reported difficulties in performing everyday tasks such as sending or downloading media files and voice notes on messaging apps like WhatsApp. Even broadband connections, which are typically more stable, have been affected, resulting in slower browsing speeds and interrupted online activities.

Business Community Concerns

The business community, alongside internet service providers (ISPs), has voiced concerns about the economic impact of the slowdown. They argue that recent government measures to monitor internet traffic, including the introduction of a so-called ‘firewall,’ have exacerbated the situation, leading to further declines in internet speed and economic losses.

However, the PTA has dismissed these concerns, attributing the slowdown solely to the issues with the submarine cables. The telecom authority has maintained that the installation of the firewall is not responsible for the current internet issues.

Government Response and Timeline

This announcement follows a session with the National Assembly panel where PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman, a retired major general, assured lawmakers that repairs would be completed by August 27. However, the latest statement from PTA now extends the timeline, indicating that full restoration of internet services is unlikely before early October.

During the session, the PTA Chairman faced tough questions from lawmakers across various political parties, reflecting the growing concern over the prolonged internet issues and their impact on daily life and business operations in Pakistan.

As the internet slowdown continues, Pakistani users are urged to prepare for reduced speeds until early October 2024. While the PTA works to repair the damaged submarine cables, the situation serves as a reminder of the critical importance of robust and resilient internet infrastructure in today’s digital age. The business community and general public alike will be closely watching the situation, hoping for a swift resolution and the return of normal internet services as soon as possible.
