Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) here on Friday restricted social media applications (APPs) temporarily.
According to a press release issued here the access to social media applications has been restricted in order to maintain public order and safety.
“An internet service provider said in a message to its customers that social media platforms had been blocked on the directions of the PTA.”
The restricted platforms include Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok and Telegram. The Interior Ministry directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) was directed to block these platforms until 3 p.m.
Why is social media banned in Pakistan?
The move comes amid fears that a radical group could use social media to ignite violent protests in the country.
The social media comes to halt just a day after Pakistan imposed a ban on the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan. PEMRA has also blocked all TV channels from providing any coverage to the banned organisation.
