Saudi Arabia Suspends Visas for 14 Countries

Saudi Arabia has suspended Umrah, business, and family visit visas for citizens of 14 countries, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, until mid-June 2025. This suspension is part of the measures to manage the participation in Hajj and ensure a safer, better-organized pilgrimage. While the decision raises questions about how pilgrims will travel for Hajj, it is crucial to understand the difference between Umrah and Hajj visas.

Both Umrah and Hajj are pilgrimages to Mecca but serve different purposes. A Hajj visa is issued exclusively during the Hajj period, while Umrah visas are available throughout the year. The Hajj visa is granted only through the Nusuk Hajj website, and it becomes available around two months before the Hajj. Hajj visas are valid only for the specific areas designated for Hajj rites in Mecca and Medina.

In contrast, the Umrah visa is available year-round, except during the Hajj period. Pilgrims holding an Umrah visa can perform the pilgrimage whenever they wish. To apply for an Umrah visa from India, individuals must go through a licensed travel agency accredited by the Ministry of Hajj and the Saudi Embassy. The required documents include a valid passport, health and vaccination certificates, and a personal photo. The Umrah visa is free of charge and is valid until the completion of the Umrah pilgrimage.

The main distinction between Umrah and Hajj is their religious significance. Hajj is one of Islam’s five pillars and is mandatory for all Muslims who are able to undertake the journey. On the other hand, Umrah is a recommended practice, but it is not compulsory like Hajj.

Hajj 2025 is expected to occur between June 4 and June 9, depending on the moon sighting. The Islamic calendar, which follows a lunar cycle, causes the dates to shift by about 11-12 days each year. As per the agreement between India and Saudi Arabia, 1,75,025 Indian pilgrims will be allowed to participate in Hajj 2025.
