Former Pakistan star Shahid Afridi has been announced as an icon player for this year’s inaugural Euro T20 Slam, joining Brendon McCullum, Shane Watson and Rashid Khan. Imran Tahir, JP Duminy, Babar Azam, Chris Lynn and Luke Ronchi have been named as marquee players.

Shahid Afridi is one of six icon players to feature in the three-week long competition alongside Shane Watson (Australia), Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) and Rashid Khan (Afghanistan). The names of the remaining two icon players & yet to be revealed.
The 2019 Euro T20 Slam is scheduled to be the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam, a Twenty20 cricket tournament, co-hosted by Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond. It is scheduled to start from 30th August 2019 and will conclude on 22nd September 2019.
As per Mr. Prashant Mishra, Managing Partner, Woods Entertainment:
“After consultation with the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands, we come to a general consensus over the name. Since the term league is used all across the world for T20 events, we wanted to add the energy factor to our tournament, hence we have decided to name it Euro T20 Slam.”
As per Mr. Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland:
“The process wasn’t just about establishing a mere name, but rather giving the tournament an identity which both aligned it with other global domestic leagues, yet made it a distinctive and a vibrant brand.”
“It was important to us to convey our points of difference that would resonate in local markets – in Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands – where cricket is not the dominant sport in town. The touch points of geography, cricket and excitement was our goal, and we hope it will gain the necessary traction with fans.”
