In a commanding performance on Wednesday, South Africa thrashed Afghanistan by nine wickets to reach the final of the T20 Cricket World Cup for the first time. The Proteas delivered an outstanding display at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Stadium, dismantling Afghanistan for a mere 56 runs.
South Africa’s bowlers were in top form, with left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi leading the charge with remarkable figures of 3 for 6. Pacer Marco Jansen also made a significant impact, claiming 3 wickets for 16 runs. The relentless pressure from fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who took two wickets each, left Afghanistan’s batting lineup in disarray, folding in just 11.5 overs.
Chasing a modest target of 57, South Africa suffered an early setback with the dismissal of Quinton de Kock, who fell to Fazalhaq Farooqi for his tournament-leading 17th wicket. However, Reeza Hendricks (29 not out) and captain Aiden Markram (23 not out) ensured there were no further hiccups. The duo guided the team to a comfortable victory, finishing on 60-1 in just 8.5 overs.
The Proteas now advance to the final, set to take place on Saturday in Barbados. They await the winner of the second semi-final between defending champions England and the unbeaten Indian team, scheduled for Thursday in Guyana. This marks a historic milestone for South African cricket as they aim for their maiden T20 World Cup title.
