Spain beat England to win Euro 2024 final

In a thrilling climax to Euro 2024, Spain emerged victorious over England, securing a 2-1 win in Sunday’s final. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a dramatic late goal, confirming Spain’s re-emergence as a dominant force on the international stage.

For England, hopes were high to end a nearly six-decade-long wait for a major title. The match initially seemed promising for the English side, especially after Spain’s influential midfielder Rodri was forced off due to injury at halftime. However, Spain quickly regrouped and took the lead just two minutes into the second half, thanks to a goal from Nico Williams, who was brilliantly assisted by fellow winger Lamine Yamal.

England showcased their resilience, a hallmark of their performances throughout the tournament. Substitute Cole Palmer, moments after coming on, drove in the equalizer in the 73rd minute, reigniting England’s hopes. Yet, these hopes were dashed in the 86th minute when Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, turned in a cross to score the decisive goal, handing Spain their record fourth European Championship title and their third in the last five editions.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his pride and satisfaction, stating, “It has been a marvellous day in which a team has been deservedly crowned champions of Europe.”

Spain’s previous European Championship victories came in 1964, 2008, and 2012. The latter two titles bookended their 2010 World Cup triumph, marking the golden era of players like Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso, and Andres Iniesta. Whether this current generation, led by the exceptionally talented Yamal, who played just a day after his 17th birthday, can replicate those achievements remains to be seen. However, their victory in the final was undoubtedly fitting.

Spain’s performance throughout the tournament in Germany was outstanding, and they remained unfazed by the predominantly pro-England crowd at the Olympiastadion. For England, this final represented their first appearance in a major international final on foreign soil since their iconic 1966 World Cup win.

England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged the disappointment but was gracious in defeat. “To lose the final is incredibly tough,” he said. “Congratulations to Spain, they were the best team in the tournament and the best team tonight.”

This defeat was particularly poignant for England, following their penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final. England now holds the unfortunate distinction of being the first team to lose back-to-back Euros finals. For captain Harry Kane, who has had a prolific goal-scoring career, the search for his first major trophy continues at the age of 30.

Spain’s victory in Euro 2024 not only adds another chapter to their illustrious football history but also signals a bright future with a new generation of stars ready to shine on the world stage.
