Sneak at the Best Pakistani Dramas of 2022

Sang-e-Mah

The success of Sang-e- Mah was rather startling. SaifeeHassan’s Sang-e-Mah was sprinkled with sheer brilliance of writing and direction, is what viewers wanted. Sang-e-Mahbelonged to debutant Atif Aslam as the play revolved around his rivalry with Haji Marjan (Naumaan Ijaz). The singer-turned-actor was unbelievably great in his first TV outing. He delivered a performance any other debutant might find challenging to ace. Meanwhile, Hania Aamir as Gul Meena was at her fascinating best. However, the tragic end of the show left viewers and fans with polarized views.

Mere Humsafar

The show was a triumph due to the winning performances of the lead pair Hamza (Farhan Saeed) and Hala (Hania Aamir). The script was based on conventional romantic relationships but the show boasts a smart screenplay and crisp editing. Director Qasim Ali Mureed proved his adamant style of storytelling, one that is raw, pumps up the zeal and channelizes human emotions. Mere Humsafar would have been a near-perfect show, had its writing could have been tight.

Mere Humnahseen

The drama was a brave attempt that highlighted the plight of people living in the northern areas of Pakistan. The narrative shed light on the obstacles set by the patriarchal men in the name of honor and vengeance. Mere Humnasheen brought to viewers a different side of (Ahsan Khan) who was deliciously wicked as Darkahzai. Apart from his classic acting chops and swag the drama also showcased a strong female character. The heroine in the story Khajista played by Hiba Bukhari was ambitious and headstrong; sets out to achieve her aim to be a doctor and serve humanity. Mere Humnasheen was a smash hit that kept the TRP charts and YouTube views racing towards the top.

Sinf-e-Ahan

Nadeem Baig’s critically acclaimed venture in collaboration with ISPR is one of those rare dramas that ask women to turn their gaze inward, question their beliefs and challenge their capabilities. With themes like gender discrimination and patriarchal mindsets at its core, Sinf-e-Ahan is as much an ode to women empowerment as it is to the nation. A special mention goes out to Yumna Zaidi and Sajal Aly’s astounding performances.

Parizaad

The Shahzad Kashmiri directorial was a rage and the protagonist Ahmed Ali Akbar delivered what is considered to be his career best performance so far. The story of a dark-skinned student who was ridiculed while growing up and had self-esteem and confidence issues. His loyalty made him a multi-millionaire. The story narrated with intrigue was packed with memorable performances, including by Ahmed Ali Akbar, Urwa Hocane, Nauman Ejaz and Yumna Zaidi. Parizaad proved that a mass pleasing entertainer could retain its individuality and bear the idiosyncratic stamp of its makers.

Fraud

The list couldn’t be complete without the superstar of the year Saba Qamar. Not just she ruled the silver screen with back-to-back hits, but she entertained her Television viewers with a power-packed performance in Fraud. Packed with a solid premise, the show manages to highlight and discuss quite a few significant social issues of how women are deceived in marriages. Qamar interprets the character with brilliance, proving yet again that she’s amongst the finest actors we have today. Saba owned Fraud like a boss.

Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi

Danish Taimoor as Shamsher created mass hysteria with KaisiTeri Khudgarzi. He played the obsessive lover to the tee. He went to all extents to get Mehak (Dur-e-Fishan Saleem). In his bid to do so, he frames her but eventually loses his life. A brilliant performance by Danish we say. Having said that, KaisiTeri Khudgarzi was yet another outing that glorified stalking and harassment managing to earn all the plaudits. The drama industry presents these obsessive lovers as palatable by diluting them with romance, which induces a deep sense of empathy and liking among viewers.
