As the April 5 deadline approaches, former President Donald Trump remains confident that TikTok will secure a deal with a non-Chinese buyer. The app’s future in the US is under intense scrutiny due to national security concerns surrounding the potential TikTok US ban.
According to Reuters, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that multiple parties are interested. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm. I’d like to see TikTok continue operating,” he said. This comes amid speculation on whether ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent, will meet divestment requirements.
In January, Trump set an April 5 deadline for TikTok to be sold. If not, the app faces a ban under a 2024 law targeting foreign-owned tech platforms.
TikTok has 170 million American users, playing a major role in digital culture. Trump hinted that if a deal isn’t completed, he might extend the deadline. Though the administration hasn’t confirmed new action, Trump’s openness to a delay leaves the door open.
TikTok was briefly banned under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. After assuming office, Trump granted TikTok 75 days to meet the law’s requirements. That period ends unless further action is taken.
Trump Considers Tariff Reductions as TikTok’s US Sale Deadline Looms
Trump reportedly mentioned reducing tariffs on Chinese goods to encourage Beijing’s approval of TikTok’s sale. If no deal is finalized, a second extension may be possible.
The initial ban was issued on January 19 due to data security concerns and ByteDance’s ties to China. However, ByteDance’s willingness to sell its US operations remains unclear.
“I’ve developed a bit of a soft spot for TikTok,” Trump said. “It helped me connect with young people during my campaign.”
Under current law, TikTok will be banned unless ByteDance sells its American business. The law allows a 90-day extension beyond April 5, though no decision on the TikTok US ban has been made yet.
