A minor disagreement over an online video game tragically escalated into violence in Yemen’s Hadramaut governorate, where an elderly man shot and killed two young men after they reportedly refused to play PUBG with his son.
The incident took place just before iftar in the Wadi Amd district in southeastern Yemen. Local media reports and a statement by the Yemeni Ministry of Interior revealed that the conflict started at a café near the suspect’s home.
A disagreement arose between the two victims and the suspect’s son when they declined his invitation to play the popular online game PUBG.
The victims, identified as 20-year-old Ali Mohammed Basaleeb and his 18-year-old brother, Majed, refused to join the suspect’s son in playing the multiplayer battle game, leading to a heated argument that soon became physical.
The son informed his father about the altercation. The 55-year-old man, identified by the initials A.M.A.B., intervened, bringing a firearm to the scene. Without hesitation, he opened fire on the two brothers, killing them on the spot.
Following the shooting, he surrendered to local authorities.
The Yemeni Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement that the suspect was arrested, and despite efforts to provide emergency assistance, the victims died at the scene.
“The district’s security services have launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the crime and are taking the necessary legal actions,” the ministry stated. –GN
